Queen Latifah was born Dana Elaine Owens on March 18, 1970, in Newark, New Jersey. The second daughter of Lance and Rita Owens, Latifah is most famous for her involvement in performance skills, political stance and gift for rhyme. When she was just 8 years old, old when she was eight, a Muslim friend gave her the name Latifah, meaning "delicate and sensitive" in Arabic. Latifah started singing in the choir at Shiloh Baptist Church in Bloomfield, New Jersey, and was the first person to perform in public when she performed a rendition of "Home" as one of the two Dorothys in a stage production of The Wizard of Oz at St. Anne's parochial school. Latifah's mom was a major influencer. She was connected to the students as well as the music. Mark James, the local disc jockey, was contacted by Latifah's daughter to perform during the dance. Mark the 45 King, invited her to appear at an event at the school.
